Bangor trumps Bessey Motors for state title

Logo, 2014 American Legion State Tournament dadaBangor won its fourth Maine American Legion state title, and its first since 1979, with a 2-0 win over Bessey Motors of South Paris at John Winkin Baseball Complex in Bangor Sunday afternoon. Bessey Motors defeated Bangor 3-2 earlier in the day to force a decisive game.

In the first game, Bessey Motors scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and another in the second to take a 2-0 lead. After Bangor answered with two runs in the top of the fourth, Bessey scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

In the decisive game, Bangor scored the game’s only two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Bangor pitchers Trevor Delaite and Andrew Hillier limited Bessey Motors to only two hits.

Bangor advances to the Northeast Regional, to be held Aug. 7 through Aug. 11 in Middletown, Connecticut. The World Series will be held Aug. 14 through Aug. 19 in Shelby, North Carolina.
