Xander Bogaerts called up by Red Sox

bogaerts_IGP2175The Boston Red Sox  officially called up Xander Bogaerts on Monday. The shortstop joined the club in San Francisco, where the Sox were set to open a three-game series with the Giants.

A member of the 2009 Aruba South team from San Nicolas, Aruba, that played in the 2009 Senior League World Series in Bangor, the 20-year-old Bogaerts began the season in Portland, Maine, with the Sox’ AA affiliate Portland Sea Dogs. He was promoted to the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox in June.

Through Sunday, Bogaerts had been hitting .297 between Portland and Pawtucket, with 23 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs, and 67 runs batted in. He also had seven stolen bases in 116 games, with a .388 on-base percentage and a .477 slugging percentage, for an OPS of .865.

In the 2009 World Series, Bogaerts batted .556 (10-for-18), with one double, one stolen base, and five runs batted in.

This past spring, mlb.com ranked Bogaerts as the 20th top prospect in all of Major League Baseball.
