Edgardo Sandoval of Panama was marvelous from the first pitch to his last pitch. Sandoval went all seven innings, striking out eight while giving up just four hits in his outing. He allowed only five runners to reach base all day.

No Latin America team has never lost to a U.S. Central team since the Senior League World Series has been in Bangor. Chitre did not disappoint in its first game.

Chitre was unable to score in the first inning, but came out swinging in the second inning. Chitre had several timely hits with a few key stolen bases, which proved to be the difference.

Carlos Espinosa led off the bottom of the second with a single and stole second. Rafael de Leon came through with a one-out RBI single to left, scoring Espinosa to put Chitre on the board 1-0. Later in the inning, Tello singled home de Leon to extend Chitre’s lead to 2-0. Chitre led 3-0 after two innings.

Chitre tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, which gave the Panamanians a 5-0 advantage. Tello delivered a big two-out RBI single, which put the game away for good.

Seven of the nine players in Chitre’s lineup recorded hits.

Dominic Pilas was charged with four runs and five hits in the loss for Clear Ridge. Pilas, Nick Verta, Ryan Kramer and Joey Madera each had a hit for the U.S. Central champ.

Chitre (1-0) has the day off Monday, but will play Emilia L.L., Emilia, Italy, on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Clear Ridge will face the U.S. Southwest champions from Northside L.L., Laredo, Texas, (0-1) at 8 p.m. Monday night.
