November 14, 2011 2012 Senior League Baseball World Series set for Aug. 12-18
Bangor has been home of the Senior League Baseball World Series since 2002. The championship game will be broadcast live on an ESPN channel. The worldwide leader in sports began broadcasting the championship games in 2007. Little League added the Senior division in 1961. At the time, the division included 13-year-olds. In 1979, 13-year-olds were given their own division, Junior League. However, a rule change for 2012 will allow leagues to place 13-year-olds in the Senior division again. The first Senior League Baseball World Series was held in 1961 in Williamsport, Pa. It was held in Bethlehem, Pa. (1963), Louisville, Ky. (1964), Des Moines, Iowa (1965-1967), Gary, Ind. (1968-1985), and Kissimmee, Fla. (1986-2001) before moving to Bangor. More than 4,100 leagues offered Senior League Baseball in 2010, with more than 62,000 players. The World Series features 10 teams, with five U.S. regional champions, four international champions, and the host district earning berths. The teams are divided into two pools of five teams each, with each team playing four games in a round robin format over the course of five days. The top two teams from each pool advance to the single-elimination semifinal round, with the two semifinal winners advancing to the championship game. Hilo Little League, from Hilo, Hawaii, won the 2011 World Series, becoming the first league to win more than one World Series in Bangor, as the league won the 2003 series. |
