August 17, 2011 Rose Capital East clinches semifinal berth with 5-4 win
The hit drove in from third base special pinch-runner Asher Boudreaux, who ran for Jacob Wadle after Wadle led off the inning with a single. Boudreaux had stolen second and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. With the win, Tyler – now 3-0 in pool play – clinched first place in Pool A and a berth in Friday’s first semifinal game. The No. 9 hitter in Wednesday’s lineup, Bandel is hitting only .222 in the series. Bandel’s hit came one inning after Notre-Dame-de-Grace’s Oliver Singson hit a two-run double to tie the game 4-4 in the top of the fifth. Rose Capital East scored first when Mason Mallard singled home Trace Reed in the first inning after Reed had reached on a fielder’s choice and stolen second base. Notre-Dame-de-Grace came back with a run to tie it in the third inning, thanks to back-to-back walks leading off the inning by Alex Carmel, and Jake Titleman. After Rose Capital East retired the next two batters, Liam Wyatt singled Carmel in to make it 1-1. In the bottom of the inning, the U.S. Southwest champ scored three runs to regain the lead, 4-1, on four hits, a walk, and a Notre-Dame-de-Grace error. Seth Gibson singled up the middle with one out and raced to third when Canada first baseman Laurent Dupuis-Solliec threw wild to second in an attempt to start a reverse double play on a grounder from Jacob Spitzer. Spitzer made it to second on the play. Trace Reed then doubled deep to left field, scoring Gibson and Spitzer, making it 3-1 in favor of Rose Capital East. Mallard followed with a single, but Reed was thrown out at the plate. A walk to Sawyer Dorsey put runners on second and first.
Hopkins remained on the ground for two minutes while a trainer and a paramedic tended to him. Surprisingly, after getting up with some help, he remained in the game after throwing a few warmup pitches from the front of the mound and then from the pitcher’s plate. Notre-Dame-de-Grace added a run of its own in the top of the fourth after Singson reached on a high throw from the third baseman to lead off, advanced to second on a single by Hopkins, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dupuis-Solliec, and scored on a groundout by Carmel. In the fifth, Singson, who homered in Notre-Dame-de-Grace’s 15-2 loss to Easton/Home Run Baker, of Talbot County, Md., tied the game 4-4 with a double to left-center field that one-hopped the warning track. For Rose Capital East, Wadle and Mallard each went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in. For Notre-Dame-de-Grace, Wyatt was 2-for-3 with a walk. Notre-Dame-de-Grace, now 0-3, will conclude its World Series play Thursday morning at 9 against Friuli Venezia Giulia (1-1), a make-up of Tuesday’s rainout. The host committed five errors defensively and made two critical errors on the bases in the second inning. A two-run, seventh inning rally came up short, as the errors proved insurmountable. Easton/Home Run Baker built a 5-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings before Brewer/Orrington broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The U.S. East champ’s first run came in the first, on a Scott Endzel walk to lead off the game, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and an error by the shortstop. After Easton/Home Run Baker put two more runners on, compliments of a walk and a single, Brewer/Orrington escaped further damage with a nifty third-to-first double play to end the inning. Easton/Home Run Baker’s second run came in the second inning when Justus Mills walked to begin the inning, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and came home on a single by Dylan Rabbitt, making it 2-0 Easton/Home Run Baker. Stolen bases were a theme for the Talbot County, Md., team, as the U.S. East champ swiped nine bases, one shy of a single-game record set by Aruba South, San Nicolas, Aruba, against Saipan, Cmmonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in last year’s series. Chris Bramble’s three stolen bases tied a record shared by three other players. In the bottom of the second, Brewer/Orrington Jeremy Bissell wasted a lead-off single when he tried to advance to third on a single to short left-center field by Spencer Valley. Easton/Home Run Baker center fielder Chance Crissinger easily threw out Bissell at third, as Bissell didn’t even slide. Valley advanced to second on the play, but found himself picked off with Ian Forrest at the plate, ending the inning. Two hits, two errors, a walk, and two stolen bases helped Easton/Home Run Baker increase its lead to 5-0 in the fourth. The host countered with its first two runs of the game in the bottom of the inning when Matt Morrow scored on a single to center by Valley and Zach Violette scored on a fielder’s choice when Valley was thrown out trying to steal second. Morrow had led off with a single and Violette had walked. Easton/Home Run Baker scored two more times in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 7-2, on a groundout by Endzel and a single by Damian South.
For Easton/Home Run Baker, which improved to 2-1, Endzel led the lineup up from the lead-off spot, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and two RBIs. For Brewer/Orrington, which fell to 1-2 and was eliminated when Rose Capital East defeated Notre-Dame-de-Grace in the day’s nightcap, Alexander was 2-for-4 with a run scored; Morrow was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI; and Valley was 2-for-3. A four-run second inning set the tone for the U.S. Central champ, extending its 1-0 lead to 5-0. Two runs in the top of the third made it 7-0 in favor of the team from Michigan. Northeast/Fraternal Northwest wracked out four hits in the second, stole three bases, and benefitted from a Tanauan balk and an error. Michael Wright and Matt Somers provided RBI singles. In the fourth, Thomas Smith hit a two-run single that made it 8-0, driving in special pinch-runner Ryan Singer, who ran for Rico Angel (walk), and Wright (walk). Down 7-0, Tanauan, the Asia-Pacific champ, countered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Melvin Rosita, which drove in Joel Lavado, who had singled to lead off the inning. In the fourth, Miguel Olmos hit a one-out double and later scored on a double by Lavado as the Asia-Pacific champ began to inch closer, 7-2. Logan Madill tripled in two runs in the fifth for the U.S. Central champ, though, to make it 9-2. The Tanauanians wouldn’t go down easily, countering with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, an RBI single by Olmos and a sacrifice fly from Lester Vispo. Tanauan left two runners on base in the inning. A throwing error by the catcher enabled Northeast/Fraternal Northwest to add a last run in the top of the seventh, making it 10-4. For Northeast/Fraternal Northwest, Wright led the way from the lead-off spot in the batting order, going 4-for-4 with a walk, four runs scored, and an RBI. Travis Walker was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Olmos led all Tanauan hitters from the sixth spot in the batting order, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Lourence Ruiz was 2-for-4. Jomark Flannegin’s bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning tied the game 2-2, as Marc Danies, who had reached on an error by the second baseman, trotted home. A sacrifice fly to right field from Marvin Brown put the Arubans ahead for good, as Miklos Petronia (single) scored. When the right fielder made an errant throw to the infield, Raypatrick Didder (single) scored as well. A Chadwick Tromp RBI double in the fifth made it 5-2. A Brown RBI single in the same inning rounded out the scoring. For Palm Bay East, it was another frustrating loss, especially against the defending World Series champs. The U.S. Southeast champs touched Didder, the starting pitcher, for three hits in the second inning, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. But that was all the damage they could do against an experienced team making its third consecutive appearance in the World Series and trying to become the first repeat champion since Chinese-Taipei last did it, in 1992 – 19 years ago. Battery mates Tromp and Didder led Aruba South at the plate, with Tromp going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Didder was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. On the mound, Didder got the complete-game win, throwing 91 pitches – four fewer than the Senior League Baseball maximum allowed. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out six. Hilo shuts out Tanauan in five innings, 10-0 Hilo, Hawaii’s Korin Medeiros went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs to lead the U.S. West champ to a 10-0, five-inning win over Tanauan in the day’s 9 a.m. makeup of a game rescheduled from Tuesday. Chayce Kaaua went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Kean Wong was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, and Kolten Yamaguchi was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in to help Medeiros offensively. Hilo put up four runs in the first, two in the second, and four more in the third while limiting the Asia-Pacific champs to only three hits. The win improved Hilo’s record to 3-0. Tanauan fell to 0-2. |
Tanner Bandel lashed a tie-breaking triple to left-center field on a two-out, 2-2 pitch in the
bottom of the sixth inning to give Rose Capital East, of Tyler, Texas, a 5-4 win over Notre-Dame-de-Grace, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Wednesday night.
Jacob Wadle hit a sharp line drive right back to pitcher Kris Hopkins, hitting Hopkins just above
the right knee. Hopkins collapsed in front of the mound and was motionless while Mallard came
around from second to score, making it 4-1.
For its second straight game, host Brewer/Orrington played itself out of a chance to win, as the
Maine District 3 champ fell 7-4 to U.S. East champ Easton/Home Run Baker, of Talbot County,
Md., in Wednesday’s 5 o’clock game.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, Brewer/Orrington rallied for two more of its
own to make things interesting. Kyle Alexander singled on a 1-0 pitch. Jeff Weeks hit a grounder
that the shortstop overran for an error, which enabled Alexander to reach third. Morrow singled
Alexander home on a 1-1 pitch. Evan Pelkey singled on an 0-2 pitch to scored Weeks and make
it 7-4. After a wild pitch moved Morrow and Pelkey to third and second bases, Bissell grounded
out to shortstop to end the game.
Northeast/Fraternal Northwest, of Midland, Mich., bounced back from its 5-1 loss to Aruba
South, San Nicolas, Aruba, Tuesday night with a strong 10-4 win over Tanauan in the 2 o’clock
game.
Defending World Series champ Aruba South, from San Nicolas, Aruba, wrapped up its pool play
schedule with a 6-2 win over Palm Bay East, from Palm Bay, Fla. The victory improved the Latin
America champ’s record to 3-1.
