| Counselors subscribe to varying counseling philosophies. You may not agree with some of these philosophies, so before you begin formal counseling,
ask a potential counselor lots of questions, such as: What do they think of medications? Do they prefer to counsel from a purely clinical standpoint or do
they take a more informal approach? Find out what they charge. If money is a problem, ask whether you can make a payment arrangement or pay
according to your income. If you receive Medicaid or Medicare, ask whether they accept such clients. If a particular counselor is not able to take you as
a client because he has a full slate of clients or because he can't afford to make a payment arrangement, ask for names of other counselors he would
recommend. Don't be afraid to call around before making a first appointment. Ask counselors what their specialties are. Don't be afraid to ask to meet
with prospective counselors without charge so you can interview them. Just as you wouldn't buy the first car you see without looking around and taking
a few test drives, you don't want to hook up with a counselor whose style or personality doesn't make you feel comfortable.
